Poetry Appreciation

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
When: Monthly on Wednesday afternoons
3rd Wednesday at 2.00pm
Venue: Private Home in Abbey Park
Cost: 50p to cover refreshments

This new group will be for members to share their love of poetry by bringing one or two of their favourite poems to read at each meeting.

We will choose themes for future meetings as a group. If you would like to say something about a poem or poet you will be able to, but this would be optional.

This is not an academic group; we are not experts! We would just like to share our love of this wonderful form of literature with others who love it too.

The meeting takes place at the leaders' home in Bordesley, Redditch and there is space for parking on their drive. The will be a small charge of 50p per session to cover a drink and biscuit part-way through the session. The size of the venue limits the group size to 10.

Short Report - June 2026 Meeting

We had a very amusing afternoon in June sharing our favourite comic poems. As usual we had a very eclectic mixture of poems from poets such as Wendy Cope, Spike Milligan, Roger McGough, Felix Dennis and Benjamin Zephaniah amongst others. In homage to last month’s theme, Romantic poets, we also heard 2 modern pieces relating to a Coleridge and a Wordsworth poem in an amusing way . Finally we had a recording of Bradley Taylor, a very proud Birmingham poet, reading a poem he had won a prestigious national Slam poetry competition with. It was called ‘I don’t care about the gods’. It is unusual for the group to use a recording but due to the speed and passion with which this type of poetry is written and because it must be read out loud, it is better to listen to the poet himself deliver this often amusing genre of poetry. Best of all is to go to a live Slam poetry competition which we might organise in the future. Those who wished to do so were able to read 2 or more poems as comic poems are quite often fairly short.

Short Report - May 2026 Meeting
We had an enjoyable afternoon in May sharing a rich variety of ‘ Romantic’ poetry. The poems showcased all the different themes of the poetry of that time. They were written by the best known poets from Blake through to Clare including 2 poems from the many female poets of the ‘Romantic’ period. It was really interesting to hear poems which we had not come across before.

Short Report - April 2026 Meeting
The meeting of the group on 15th April was very enjoyable . Even though the theme of ‘Nature' has a huge volume of poetry devoted to it, it was great to hear such diverse poetry from a Japanese poem to a poem about a snake, along with more traditional poems . We all chose 1 or 2 poems as we had time, with a short discussion about each poem. Chris and I are learning a lot even after 2 meetings and we hope the other members enjoy it as much as we do!
